There are a number of much...BUT NOT THE BEST SHOW.

There are a number of much better shows on in town, this is one of the most average shows, on a number of levels, that I have seen in years. It is sweet but slight. Everyone in every show works immensely hard to get them up on their feet; and kudos to these guys for getting it up and going; attaining a following, and the support of the Mirvishes. If some people enjoy this show - that's great. But there are many of us who were absolutely underwhelmed. Please, let's not call this great theatre. I tired of reports that this show is anything other than okay. A sweet piece of theatre that has behind it a very kind and well intended heart. It's heart is great, and I give them credit for that, because sometimes shows are well executed but lack heart, but heart doesn't necessarily mean it's great theatre, and MMJLWW lacks many of the necessary ingredients to make it great. The story, though potentially interesting, as told by the writers is about as prosaic as it could be, the songs are sweet, sound a bit the same, but are ultimately forgettable, the acting by the principal performers (with the exception of Lisa Horner who is stands out as excellent) ranged from 'If you hold an Actor's Equity card you should be able to act that well.' through to a bit one dimensional and self concious, though the singing across the board was enjoyable. The direction was solid, though not especially powerful. I felt like I was watching a very competent school touring show. As for comparisons to Drowsy Chaperone; the only commonality is Fringe to Mirvish. MMJLWW does not in any way hold a candle to Drowsy Chaperone in ANY of that shows incarnations. Drowsy Chaperone was although simple, clever; and the performers tended to be more adept. It is disappointing that many, many, much greater and substantial pieces of theatre that are created in Canada are overlooked and that this nice but very average material is what is held up as a fine example of great theatre. It's okay, that's all it is. May it run at many a summer stock theatre.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
